Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt: ‘It Is Going To Work’
Listen tothis article
This morning, President Donald Trump declared, “IT’S LIBERATION DAY IN AMERICA!” In preparation for Trump’s tariff plans to be unveiled today, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that America will no longer be “ripped off” by foreign countries. She assured the public that Trump’s economic plan “is going to work . . . [thereby] restoring the Golden Age of America and making America a manufacturing superpower.”
Trump will host a Make America Wealthy Again event this afternoon and tell the country how his tariff plan will work. Apparently, Trump has three possible tariff options on the table.
- A “20% universal tariff” on virtually any import.
- A “reciprocal” tariff plan targeted at countries with higher tariffs on the U.S. (This will include varying percentages of tariffs from country to country.)
- A hybrid of the first two options: “an across-the-board tariff on a subset of nations.”
To be sure, Trump is casting a long-term vision for the country. He believes that placing tariffs on other countries will cause manufacturing to boom in America instead of overseas. But it will be a gradual process, and he’s planting the seed of rebuilding manufacturing at home.
We are already seeing an impact of Trump’s tariff plans, so that’s why the 20% universal tariff seems unlikely. For example, India has had high tariffs on U.S. goods. But recently, India announced it would scale back its tariffs. This is a huge win for America.
ACLJ Senior Counsel and Director of Policy Harry Hutchison explained why Trump declared today “Liberation Day”:
So today has been labeled Liberation Day. And arguably, that means that the United States, for too long, has been held hostage to a free trade mantra, and many other countries have taken advantage of us in terms of industrial production, pharmaceutical production, dairy production. . . . The United States has had, for instance, a trade deficit with India of $40–60 billion. The United States has had a trade deficit of $65 billion or thereabouts with Canada. . . . The trade deficit with China has surged to $1 trillion. That is an astronomical number. If true, that means that the U.S. industry, in a wide range of departments, has been hollowed out and is in the process of being hollowed out, and Donald Trump is saying, This is far enough, and you can go no further.
Clearly, Trump believes this is the best way forward for America’s prosperity. And now the nation anxiously awaits to see what tariff option he chooses.
Today is also a big day at the U.S. Supreme Court, where oral arguments are being made in a case that could potentially defund Planned Parenthood. In February, we filed a crucial amicus brief in Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, potentially our most significant abortion case since we assisted in overturning Roe.
This case began after South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster issued an Executive order directing the South Carolina Department of Health & Human Services to deem abortion clinics unqualified to receive Medicaid funding. Planned Parenthood and an individual plaintiff immediately sued in federal court, challenging the state’s decision.
The district court issued a preliminary injunction against the Executive order and as we reported, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed. The case was appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, and the ACLJ filed an amicus brief asking the Court to overturn the ruling below.
Our efforts to finally end the flow of public funding for abortion and to devastate Planned Parenthood need your support. The billions they have received to subsidize the murder of babies on the taxpayers’ dime must end.
We just extended our Life & Liberty Drive to fund our legal efforts to defund the abortion giant. Donate today – gifts are doubled. And be sure to sign our petition: Defund and Defeat Planned Parenthood at the Supreme Court.
